Image Transfer (*update*)
ETA: If someone has clear/white embossing powder to spear... could you send me a small sample? I really really want to make some ATCs (3 actually) with embossing resist and $10 (jar + shipping)  seems too much for a little jar >.<! hope someone can help!

Also known as "My last and ultimate artistic frustratioh. Gah". I have two make 2 ATCs for a trade with a user on ATCards.com. My first intention was to draw and paint with watercolors, as always, but for some reason the subject of the cards didn't turned out fine =/ (vintage nudes, lawl).

Since collage isn't my thing I didn't know what to do. That until I was surfing some links posted on the Art Discussion forum and it came to me: image transfer. It seemed nice, because I could paint my background and apply the picture over and it'd look ancient and distressed and pretty.  Besides, it seemed like a easy technique.

EASY my @$$ :(

I tried first printing with my inkjet printer over the smoth side of a transparecy the rubbing it on the paper with a popsickle. While this worked on a small image with only one color (black, and white background) it didn't turned out with a more complex one :( Then I tried printing on a normal paper and rubbing alcohol over the image (partially worked, probably because the image was printed way before). Finally, normal paper and acetone (no luck at all with this one, LOL).

Most of the sites I browsed on Google mentioned that it worked with laser photocopies (color or b&w). I'd have to try that on monday after my classes. I have to go send some envelopes and there are many printers and photocopy centers in the way :) Other sites talked about inkjet printing over photo paper.

Does anyone ese have a tip on image transfer? I would appreciate anything that uses common and cheap materiales.

YO!

I love doing image transfer. You know the post on my flickr with the rubber-stamp carvings you commented on? I have done transfers onto that medium, and also onto paper and wood.

Here is what you can do:

Make a TONER PHOTOCOPY (not in a printer. USE A XEROX-style photocopier)! Put your image face down (reverse it in Photoshop if it has type or if it is facing the opposite direction that you want it to be). You can transfer it one of several ways that I have used:

1. Color the back of your photocopy using a Blender marker (Chartpak and Prismacolor both make one, and I see that you have used Copic; I checked them out and they seem to be regular art markers. If they make a "clear blender" style marker, you can use that). Depending on what you are transfering the image to, you may want to go over it with a popsicle stick or whatever, but sometimes the toner from your image just sticks.

2. Do the same with mineral spirits.

3. Do the same with Essential Oil of Wintergreen. This is the least toxic of the three and smells awesome naturally besides.

Of course, you can also use transfer paper (Sally's or Saral are the kinds I use) and just trace your image onto your media. I mentioned this in my last comment about brown lines: these papers come in black, blue, red and brown (which will be the color of your line). Maybe others as well.

I am sending you a package soon! I am waiting because TODAY I have to print another large edition, I will be using Rives BFK (300 lb) again and I am also trying a vintage textured watercolor paper, I think it was made by Strathmore. It is likely cheaper to send all these little pieces at once! Do you want me to send you some Sally's and Saral to try? Right now I have blue and black.

Old magazines on a certain kind of stock (the kind LIFE magazine was printed on in this country) will transfer ALL COLORS to another paper using the wintergreen or mineral spirits. I couldn't tell from your post what sort of image, exactly, you wanted to transfer.

Oh yeah! AND! I mentioned Acrylic Matte medium in my last post too; Toner (black only) can be made into mini transparencies by coating the image several times (letting it dry between coats) with a Matte Medium (I always use matte but gloss would work too) and then washing off the paper under warm water, sort of rubbing it. You will have a clear copy of your image which you can then adhere to ANY MEDIUM AT ALL (including goache or paint, etc) using more matte medium (or Mod Podge) as your "glue".

GOOD LUCK~ Post pics when you get something to work! We wanna see!

wow, you rock Milly! :D Thank you so much for all the tips, I'll try the photocopies first <3

What i want to transfer are some vintage nude images (here's a Flickr set I found). I'll print a "collage sheet" today and have that photocopied.

And COPIC does have a colorless blender (of which I have a full bottle too, LOL!). For what I have read, COPICs are very much like Prismacolor markers (alcohol based markers). Glad I finally found another use for that blender :p
